Kotka's modern Maretarium has over 20 giant fish tanks representing various bodies of
water. The Baltic tank is the largest, with local sea life fed regularly by a diver (check the
online calendar for weekly feeding times). Water is piped in from the sea to maintain the
natural life cycle of fish, so salmon spawn in autumn and in winter freakish eelpout give
birth.

Situated 5km north of Kotka amid the salmon-rich Kymijoki's rapids, this simple wooden
lodge was built in 1889 for Tsar Alexander III. Most of the furniture is original and rooms
look much as they did when he was a frequent visitor. The riverside forest setting (now a
28-hectare nature reserve with walking trails) is beautiful. Frequent buses (€3.30, 10
minutes, up to five per hour) stop at Langinkoski church, from where it's a 1.2km walk.

Towering above Isopuisto Park, St Nicholas Orthodox Church was completed in 1801 and
is Kotka's only building to survive the Crimean War. It's believed to be the work of archi-
tect Yakov Perrini, who designed the St Petersburg Admiralty.

Kotka Church's distinctive steeple is visible throughout town. Inside the neo-Gothic
church there's artful woodcarving, a resounding baroque-style organ and a beautiful al-
tarpiece painted by Pekka Halonen.
