OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
THE ART ISLAND
The upmarket island of Kuusisaari has two excellent private galleries,
Didrichsen
isaarenpolku 11, Kuusisaari;adult/child €10/free; 4-8pm Wed, noon-4pm Sun Aug-late-Jun), both
set in elaborate villas and showing the collections of their one-time owners. Both have a
good permanent collection of Finnish art of the golden age as well as local and interna-
tional 20th-century art, supplemented by changing exhibitions. Bus 194 or 195 will get
you to the island; the galleries are under five minutes' stroll apart. It's also an easy walk
from Seurasaari, so there's plenty out here for a day trip.

This traditional public wood-fired sauna in Kallio dates back to 1928. This type of place
largely disappeared with the advent of shared saunas in apartment buildings, but it's a clas-
sic experience, where you can also get a scrub down and massage. There are separate
saunas for men and women; bring your own towel or rent one (€3). It's a short stroll from
Sörnäinen metro station. Closes Sundays June to mid-August.
