How It Works
Configure the DHCP Allocator when you want to assign addresses to clients on your local area
network. This service is not required if you already have a DHCP server on your network. It is
not as full-featured as the DHCP Server service provided with Windows Server 2003, 2000, or
even NT 4. The only options that you can configure or that are distributed by the DHCP Allo-
cator are the range of IP addresses, the subnet mask, the default gateway, and the DNS server.
You cannot issue other settings such as WINS servers, MX records, or domain names.

5-15. Adding or Removing a DHCP Relay Agent
Problem
You want to configure your router to relay DHCP requests to a DHCP server.
Solution
Using a Graphical User Interface
Note The following steps assume that you have already added the DHCP Relay Agent as a routing
protocol. If you have not done so, install the protocol. See Recipe 5-8, “Adding a Routing Protocol,” for the
details of this procedure.
1.
Start the Routing and Remote Access Services administrative console from the
Administrative Tools folder in the Start menu, or directly from %systemroot%\system32\
rrasmgmt.msc .
2.
Expand the console tree below the server object until you have selected IP Routing
DHCP Relay Agent.
3.
Right-click DHCP Relay Agent and select Properties.
4.
Specify the IP address of the DHCP server to which you want to send requests and click
the Add button, or select the IP address of the server that you want to remove and click
the Remove button.
5.
Click the OK button when complete.
