CARB, along with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and DOE/
NREL are funding the construction of a V2G prototype by AC Propulsion. The
V2G prototype will be a compact 4 door sedan augmented with 9 kWh Pb-acid
battery pack, 30 kW dc auxiliary power unit, a 1.4 L SI engine and custom designed
alternator auxiliary power unit. The vehicle engine will be modified to run off
natural gas when parked and gasoline when driving. The battery will provide 35 mi
(56 km) of electric-only range. This in effect will be an H60 hybrid. Performance
will be consistent with PNGV targets and the auxiliary power supply will provide
level 3 outlets.
A level 3 charger is essentially the type and rating used already for hybrid bus
chargers, typically a 480 V ac utility 3-phase connection with one rack for switchgear
and the second the dc charger rated up to 600 V dc and 50 A dc , 36 kW capable. In 2009
