Figure 1-1: In the seven bridges of Königsberg problem, Leonhard Euler
explored whether each bridge could be crossed only once. On the left is a
map showing the seven bridges, and on the right is the graph equivalent.
One of the first graph visualizations we produced was a geographic graph
problem as well. In supply chain optimization, the task is to optimize the
shipping between factories and warehouses to reduce costs. As shown in
Figure 1-2 , our visualization depicted the locations of facilities with icons
indicating attributes such as type, inventory, capacity, and utilization, as
well as major links indicating average costs.
