The extremes of digital imaging are explored when digital film and special effects work
creates those blockbuster movie effects. Industrial Light & Magic has developed a technol-
ogy called OpenEXR for the exchange of high-quality image data. Other high-dynamic
range imaging systems use floating-point TIFF files (a.k.a. TIFF float). Visualization data
stored in hierarchical data format (HDF) files may also end up being rendered using
high-dynamic range techniques. The HDF files are most likely to be found in scientific
research laboratories, but they are used in some other disciplines for storing complex
graphical data.
Table 6-7 summarizes the popular HDR representations and shows some of their
attributes.
