WORLD GOLF VILLAGE
The ultimate monument to a good walk spoiled, the World Golf Village ( 877-888-2002;
www.worldgolfvillage.com ; 1 World Golf Pl) is a massive golf resort, golf-course complex, golf
museum and all-around golf-themed attraction.
Fans of the sport flock here to the World Golf Hall of Fame ( 904-940-4133;
www.worldgolfhalloffame.org ; 1 World Golf Pl; adult/child $20/5; 10am-6pm Mon-Sat, noon-6pm
Sun), an 18-exhibit museum: the front nine covering the history of the sport and the back
nine examining modern professional golf. Separating them is the Hall of Fame itself, with
multimedia exhibits on inductees. Admission includes nine holes on a real grass putting
green designed to PGA specifications, and an IMAX film.
Two legendary on-site courses, King & Bear and Slammer & Squire , are open for pub-
lic tee times. If you're keen to improve your swing, two- to five-day PGA Tour Golf
Academy ( www.touracademy.com ) packages start from $635; more expensive packages in-
clude accommodation at one of four on-site resorts. Private lessons start at $90 per
hour.
Whether you're staying here or not, grab a burger from Caddyshack ( 904-940-3673;
www.murraybroscaddyshack.com ; 455 S Legacy Trail E106; mains $10-26; 11:30am-10pm) res-
taurant and bar, named for the movie starring Bill Murray, who - along with his five broth-
ers - owns it.
World Golf Village is just off I-95 via exit 323, about halfway between St Augustine and
Jacksonville.
Sleeping
For convenience and atmosphere, stay in the historic downtown area where there's a plen-
itude of classic B&Bs; check out the selection on www.staugustineinns.com . For larger
rooms and cheaper prices, there's equally as many chain motels on San Marco Ave and
Ponce de Leon Blvd. Otherwise, head to the beach. St Augustine is a popular weekend es-
cape for Floridians - prices go up by about 30% on weekends and a minimum two-night
stay is often required.
