Virtual environment of WBT provides very
powerful configurations that can replace
the costive practical sessions required in
engineering education.
World-Wide Web and Internet technologies are
the main support of modern communication. They
have established foundations of modern educa-
tional systems which are offering an extraordinary
volume of information to a wide spectrum of learn-
ers, even at schools, universities and factories, or
house users which are looking for specific objects.
Internet contains some of the vantage components
of distance education naturally supplying time and
place independency as the server computers are
working 24 hours a day, all over the year.
With all the advantages happening in dis-
tance communication, the teaching and training
technology is gravitating more and more toward
web-based aspects. The main users of web-based
training technologies are still the students of the
universities and schools. However, due to its
virtual supplements, web-based training can star
more effectively in some particular branches of
science such as engineering.
In addition to all the advantages of WBT, it
includes some disadvantages as well:
Initial implementation of a WBT system
can be more costive than the cost of pub-
lishing course material as textbooks.
Bandwidth limitations and other limitations
on required electronic devices such as the
capabilities of computers are considered as
the constrains of WBT development.
WBT is more adapted with self-directed
students. But the students who are more
used to traditional techniques of teacher-
classroom - printed textbooks or the stu-
dents who do not have enough skills in
using computer or internet may find it dif-
ficult to get adapted.
WBT provides time and place indepen-
dency for the students; however the stu-
dents are more possible to get interrupted
because of the freedom they gain because
of the natural self- dependency of WBT
method.
Web-based training is a novel instructional
technique offering many superior advan-
tages over traditional methods. Potential ca-
pabilities of web-based training nominate it
as a suitable method for engineering educa-
tion, some of which can be counted as:
Even with the existence of Virtual labora-
tories, the students will not get the idea of
the real training, as well as they are needed
to be trained for their coming careers.
WBT offers time-effective and cost-effec-
tive training services.
WBT overcomes the disadvantages of tradi-
tional instructional methods based on print-
ed course material. In WBT the educational
content can be changed or added fast and
easily.
Collecting all the presented information, WBT
can be counted as a powerful method when it is
designed and applied in its right position. It is
certainly the most perfect method to enter in the
course content and actually start it, especially for
engineering courses where the provided virtual
environment of WBT can help the students to fig-
ure out the subject. WBT would be very effective
when the technical capabilities of the students and
their skills have been depicted realistically. The
main advantage of WBT is that it can be easily
WBT provides standardized courses ensur-
ing congruous training.
The educational content can be easily de-
signed to be consistent with different bud-
gets and cultures.
Course material can be easily adapted and
updated for different learners and according
to their needs.
