ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Ì Giacopazzi's 18 Harbour Rd T 01890 750317,
W giacopazzis.co.uk. There's no mistaking from the man-
sized ice-cream models outside this shop that Giacopazzi's
are tremendously proud of their gelatos. Made daily, the ice
cream is, for many, a reason alone to come to Eyemouth
they do a good fish tea too here, for £10 (or £5.90
takeaway). Sun-Thurs 9am-8pm, Fri-Sat 9am-9pm.
Redhall Cottage A1107, 1 mile south of Eyemouth

solitary terrace of four farm-workers' cottages, converted
into a guesthouse and restaurant with snug bar. The

each morning; while restaurant meals are the most
refined in this neck of the woods. Mains range from a £9
vegetarian risotto to £15 for lamb shank with mash and
real gravy. Food served Mon-Thurs 10 am- 11pm, Fri-
Sat 10am-1am, Sun 11.30am-11pm. £80
The Tweed valley
Rising in the hills far to the west, the River Tweed snakes its way across the Borders until
it reaches the North Sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed, most of its final stretch forming the
boundary between Scotland and England. his is the area known as the Merse (from the
Old English for marsh), a flat landscape of rich farmland and wooded riverbanks where
the occasional military ruin serves as a reminder of more violent days. he Border abbeys -
perhaps the best reason for visiting the region - also lie in ruins, not because of the
Reformation, but because they were burnt to the ground by the English, for whom the
lower Tweed was the obvious point at which to cross the border into Scotland.
