let records through the filter. Here's how to set up the Customer layout's Invoices portal to
show only invoices that have a balance:
1. In Layout mode, double-click the Invoices portal .
The Portal Setup window appears.
2. Click the Filter portal records option .
The Specify Calculation window appears. Above the Calculation box, the label reads,
“Each portal record will be visible when.”
3. In the calculation box, type Invoices::Balance Due > 0 . Or if you prefer, double-
click the field name to enter it into the box and then type > 0 .
However you do it, the calculation checks the value in the Invoices::Balance Due
field before deciding whether to show each record in the portal. Click OK to return to
the Portal Setup.
4. Click the Sort portal records option and then move the Invoice::Date field to the
Sort order list .
That way, the oldest invoice record will appear at the top of the portal.
5. Click OK until you're back on the Customers layout .
The label at the bottom of the portal changes to show that it's filtered ( Figure 14-5 ).
6. Switch to Browse mode .
That's where you'll see the real changes.
Make sure you're viewing a Customer record with at least one invoice showing a Balance
Due amount. Customer Kara Thrace in your sample database will work.
