If you don't see the graphic rulers running along the top and left sides of the lay-
out, choose View
→
Rulers
.
Your layout should now resemble
Figure 8-7

To create a vertical guide, drag the ruler running down the left side of the layout to the
right. You'll see a thin blue line come out from the ruler. Release the mouse button
when the line is 90 points from the left edge, as illustrated in
Figure 8-8
.
Figure 8-7. This layout is ready to get some guides. It's essential that the rulers are dis-
played when creating guides. There's no menu command or keyboard shortcut for adding a
new guide; you must drag it from a ruler.

Drag out a second vertical guide, placing its left edge at 100 points

Drag down two horizontal guides from the ruler across the top of the layout.
Place the first one at 180 points from the top and the second at 200 points
.
Your layout is divided into four major sections with a narrow vertical buffer and a
more substantial horizontal buffer.
