tons at the bottom of the window become available. Click Edit to open the Layout Setup dialog box.
Duplicate creates a new layout just like the selected one with the word “Copy” appended to the
layout's name. Click Delete, and you have one opportunity to change your mind. If you don't
Cancel, FileMaker will delete the selected layout for good; deleting a layout is instant and perman-
ent. Open, off to the bottom right of the dialog box, will bring up the selected layout in a new win-
dow.
Perhaps the most useful organizational tool here is the Layout Folder. Add a folder using the
triangle next to the New button and naming the folder when prompted. Once created, a lay-
out folder can contain any number of layouts and subfolders. Simply drag a layout from the
list onto a folder to place it inside. When viewing the Layout pop-up menu in the toolbar,
you'll then see your folders listed with arrows pointing to submenus of the layouts they con-
tain.
Formatting Fields
In the Inspector, the Data tab is all about fields. With few exceptions, the controls on the
Data tab are available only when you've selected a field on your layout; other layout objects
such as graphics and buttons don't apply. The Field section is where you specify which
field's data to display and which field controls it should have. The Behavior section gives
you control over user access to the field. The final section, Data Formatting, gives you a
wide range of ways to present numbers, dates, times, and graphics. Much of building a lay-
out comes down to how the fields behave, and most of that is managed using the Inspector's
