the east coast, this is a chic and popular hideaway of seven a/c and fan rooms with open-
air showers in a contemporary building that feels like a groovy seaside home. The d eserted
beach is a few steps out front, with dining tables on the sand, and there's a pool. $144
Wilson's Retreat 0370 612 0060, wilsons-retreat.com . Named after the volleyball in
the Cast Away film, this gorgeous small resort has eight spacious suites and two villas with
private pools. There's a fanta stic restaurant (see Wilson's ) and one of the island's best snor-
kelling spots is right outside. $153
EATING
With a mass of restaurants to choose from, half the fun is wandering slowly down the main
drag, trying to decide which to go for. Alternatively, from sunset onwards, head for the pop-
ular night market in front of the art market, where kaki lima handcart stalls serve up cheap
and authentic food - ayam bakso (chicken soup), nasi campur , seafood and nasi goreng are
all on offer, from Rp15,000 - which you can eat at the tables set out in front.
CENTRAL AND THE EAST COAST
The Beach House 0370 614 2352, beachhousegilit.com . A popular spot for nightly sea-
food barbecues, this beachside restaurant also serves lots of pasta dishes - like lobster ravi-
oli for Rp110,000 - as well as spicy chicken taliwang (Rp60,000), apple pie, a special kids'
menu and plenty more. Daily 8am-11pm.
Café Gili 0813 1694 4000. The loungers under the casuarina trees are the big draw here,
set out on a pretty stretch of beachfront, with views across to Gili Meno. In the afternoon
they light up the barbecue and grill fish like snapper filet (Rp79,000) and barracuda or kebab.
Daily 7am-11pm.
Kayu Cafe 0878 6547 2260. The most charming café on Gili T is Finnish-run and very
popular with female travellers. There are sandwiches (BLT costs Rp35,000), salads, pasta,
healthy juices and snacks, and freshly baked bread and cake (like banana carrot, Rp30,000).
It has the best coffee on the island, too. Sit out on the terrace by the beach or inside the a/c
room. Daily 7am-7pm.
Kikinovi 0819 1592 5729. A vivacious grey-haired lady cooks up ten pots or so of cheap
local food every lunchtime and sells it from her small cornershop warung by the art market.
There are plenty of vegetarian choices. The fish sate is Rp30,000. Daily 10am-4pm.
Ko-ko-mo 0370 613 4920, kokomogilit.com . Sophisticated fine dining on crisp white
