doori dishes, kebabs, rogan josh , dopiaza , kofta , masala , biriani and dosas (from Rp55,000),
plus shisha pipes with aromatic tobacco (from Rp80,000). There's seating by the shore plus
low tables and cushions. Daily noon-1am.
Scallywags 0370 614 5301, scallywagsresort.com . Fantastic seafood barbecues in the
evenings - buy the fish at market price and get potatoes and unlimited salad to go with it
(from Rp85,000) - plus open sandwiches, innovative salads, good tapas platters and brownies
with mint ice cream. Also has free wi-fi, comfy chairs and beachfront tables. Daily 7am-1am.
Taman Thai 0878 6534 9403. Authentic Thai food served in a spacious building just in-
land from Freedive Gili. There's red curry for Rp55,000 and chicken cashew stir fry for
Rp34,000, with dishes labelled spicy, “Lombok spicy” or the hotter “Thai spicy”. They'll de-
liver to your hotel for Rp10,000 too. Daily 7am-11pm.
THE NORTH COAST
Café Wayan 0370 613 0466. Great for bread, croissants, cinnamon rolls and death-by-
chocolate cake (from Rp25,000). Also serves famously good prawns (prawns à la Ketut,
Rp65,000), plus salads, pizzas and pastas. Eat at tables on the beach in front of Alam Gili .
Daily 7am-10pm.
Karma Kayak 0818 0559 3710, karmakayak.com . Right on the beach, under the trees
in front of a good snorkelling area, this is a great place to chill out for a few hours and is
the prime spot for sunset viewing from May to mid-September. There are beanbags, loungers
and tables on the sand, and good tapas on the menu - calamari, vegetable tempura, patatas
bravas , tapenade and baba ghanoush among them (Rp19,000-35,000). Daily 7am-11pm.
Wilson's Wilson's Retreat 0370 612 0060, wilsons-retreat.com . One of the best din-
ing spots on the Gilis, Wilson's has a French chef who changes the international menu
served at this open-air restaurant every few days. Besides French, international and tapas
dishes, there's a fantastic breakfast menu (till noon, Rp181,000), baguettes, and lemon cake
(Rp56,000). A candlelit dinner on the beach is possible, too. Daily 7am-11pm.
