In-Depth Information
Gilimanuk
On the tip of Bali, GILIMANUK is more of a transit point to Java than a destination. A
24-hour ferry service shuttles across the Bali Strait, so there's no reason to stop except to see
the silhouettes of Java's volcanoes across the water or to fry your palate with a spicy plate
of betutu chicken. The Bali Strait is a notoriously difficult stretch of water to negotiate due
to treacherous currents. Despite this, it is occasionally swum; the world record, set by a Cali-
fornian expat in May 2006, is 29 minutes and 30 seconds. During the ice ages, it's likely
that a land bridge connected the two islands, which both rest on the continental plate known
as the Sunda shelf, enabling humans and other animals to walk between the two. The Mu-
seum Manusia Purba (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm; donation requested; 0365 61328) displays the
skeletons and grave finds from a Neolithic settlement here. Don't get too excited (though the
museum staff will by your arrival).
