In-Depth Information
There's no hustle, no tourist shops - just low-key accommodation, a few warung and a beach
bar, and the sense of a shared secret. Get here soon, though, as building is on the up. The
caveat to all this is that a vicious rip inshore makes most of the beach too dangerous for cas-
ual swimmers; heed local advice or be content to paddle at low tide. However, there are a few
tracks to explore inland through fields of rice and banana plantations; you could also enjoy
tracking up the Balian River or just heading west along 30km of grey-sand wild beach - Me-
jan Beach, 1km west, could define escapism.
Recently enterprising locals put up a road barrier to demand a Rp5000 “Tourism Retribu-
tion” fee. Either see it as boosting the local economy or, if staying, say the name of your hotel
in order to slip through.
