sional house, and after another 5.5km reaches the turn-off for the bridge to Nusa Ceningan.
From here it's 2km up to Lembongan village, then another 3km back to Jungutbatu.
Lembongan
At the top of a steep hill 3km southwest of central Jungutbatu, LEMBONGAN is the
largest village on the island and the location of the Underground House (open on request;
Rp20,000). Dug between 1961 and 1976 by Made Byasa, a local man who was inspired by
the Mahabharata , it consists of several dank rooms, a well and ventilation shafts.
The southwest coast
Two of Bali's loveliest beaches lie on the southwest coast. From Lembongan, follow the main
road west through to a T-junction and signs for Mushroom Bay, 750m down a side road. A
left turn here leads 1km to Dream Beach , one of the island's most beautiful bays with its
white sand and clear, turquoise water - beware though, the currents are dangerous. There's
accommodation and a restaurant here. It's just a few minutes' walk beyond to lovely little
Sunset Beach , with its own resort. At both beaches, it's usually too risky for a swim but you
can use the pools for a fee of Rp50,000.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: NUSA LEMBONGAN
What with the private fast boats, tourist shuttle and slow boats, there are around ten daily
services to Jungutbatu and far more to Mushroom Bay. All leave from the end of Jl Hang
Tuah in north Sanur. In Lembongan offices are on the seafront of southern Jungutbatu; that
of Perama is just north of Pondok Baruna . Note that all boats anchor just off the beach, so
you're required to wade ashore; a porter may offer to carry your luggage (Rp20,000). On
arrival at Lembongan “beach guides” may offer to show you to accommodation for free (ho-
tels pay commission). They'll also offer motorbikes to transport you between bays (around
Rp40,000), though if you reserve ahead hotel staff should meet you.
FROM AND TO SANUR
By tourist shuttle boat Private operators include transfers from south Bali resorts with tick-
ets. Operators include Scoot ( 0361 285522, scootcruise.com ) and Rocky ( 0361 801
2324, rockyfastcruise.com ) , which both run four times a day in each direction (30min;
from Rp250,000/Rp450,000 one-way/return). Scoot also has a combination ticket with Gili
Trawangan and Lombok (Rp675,000/Rp1,300,000 one-way/return). Both have offices on Jl
Hang Tuah. Perama ( 0361 751875, peramatour.com ) operates a shuttle boat from Sanur
that connects with its island-wide shuttle bus services from Sanur, Kuta and Ubud. It runs to
Jungutbatu (daily at 10am; 90min; Rp100,000); book a day in advance.
By public boat Slow boats can be lovely but also unnerving when crowded and swells are
large. In theory services leave for Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay at 8am (Rp60,000; 2hr) and
for Jungutbatu at 10.30am (Rp80,000; 90min), but they can be cancelled if bookings are not
sufficient. Public fast boats (Rp175,000 one way; 30min) leave for Jungutbatu three times a
