In-Depth Information
gian settled in Sanur and set up his easel, painting canvases of 16-year-old beauty Nyoman
Pollok and her friends; “the beauty and splendid figure of Ni made the painter enjoy his stay”,
the museum notes drily. Married three years later, the couple lived in the floridly carved
house where around eighty of his works now hang; Impressionist early paintings from his
travels in Europe, North Africa and India and romanticized canvases of Ni and her friends
from the 1950s. Imagine French Impressionism channelled by Gauguin and you're close. The
1930s house is also interesting for its carving and the couple's furniture - Ni donated the
property to the government on her death in 1985.

The Balinese love their tropical gardens and many buy their plants from the nurseries that
line the roads between Sanur and Denpasar. One enterprising nursey has turned itself into a
paying attraction as the Bali Orchid Garden and encourages tourists (who probably aren't
thinking of taking a bloom home) to discover the beautiful flowers anyway. The grounds are
pleasingly landscaped and alongside the huge variety of orchids are other tropical lovelies,
including heliconias, bromeliads and tree ferns.
