MARKETS
The gold quarter Not far from Jl Sulawesi is the city's gold quarter. Centred on the stretch of
Jl Hasanudin that runs west from Jl Diponegoro to the river, this market has lots of jewellery
outlets, but designs cater to local tastes rather than tourist ones and it pays to do some home-
work on the price of gold before embarking on the obligatory bargaining. Generally daily
9am-4pm.
Jalan Sulawesi Just to the east of Pasar Badung, this narrow thoroughfare, running from Jl
Hasanudin in the south to Jl Gajah Mada in the north, is devoted to fabric of all descriptions,
much imported by Middle Eastern and Indian merchants but including batik, songket bro-
cades and sari silks. Generally daily 9am-4pm.
Pasar Badung The biggest market and the best occupies a three-storey covered pasar be-
side the river. Trading takes place almost 24hr a day - the main action is around 4-6am, and
there's a lull in early afternoon - with buyers and sellers pouring in from all over Bali. You'll
find fruit, veg and spices on lower floors, while those upstairs sell everything from buckets
to boots, shoes to shovels. Daily 4am-11pm.
Pasar Burung The city's bird market is a small but picturesque affair full of songbirds and
the delicate cages that owners keep them in. Daily 8am-6pm.
Pasar Kumbasari Directly across the Badung River from Pasar Badung. Though suffering
from competition in the shopping centres to the south, this four-storey art market stocks
clothes, souvenirs, textiles, woodcarvings, paintings and sarongs - all the stuff on sale in Kuta
but without the crowds and generally at cheaper prices. Daily 7am-5pm.
