EATING
There are few tourist-oriented restaurants in Denpasar, so this is a good chance to sample
Bali's
cheap
,
authentic neighbourhood places
to eat. Note that smaller restaurants gener-
ally shut by 7pm. Renon is the eating destination of choice for middle-class locals and expats
but it's a fair haul from the hotels in the city centre.
Babi Guling
Jl Sutomo.
There's just one dish at this simple warung - roast suckling pig (
babi
guling
), considered by some to be the best in the city. And it's cheap too, at Rp25,000/plate.
There's no sign, but look for the open shelter with low tables just north of Pura Maospahit.
Daily roughly 10am-6pm.
Bhineka Jaya Kopi Bali
Jl Gajah Mada 80 0361 224016.
At this outlet of Indonesia's
Butterfly Globe Brand coffee you can sample a cup of creamy Bali Gold - then choose which
grade of island beans to take home.
Mon-Sat 9am-4pm.
Hong Kong
Jl Gajah Mada 99 0361 434845.
Boasting an interior with all the appeal of a
burger chain, this Chinese restaurant offers a reasonably priced menu that is strong on sea-
food, including fried grouper in black bean sauce (Rp50,000) and is one of the few central
places open late.
Daily 10am-9pm.
Pasar Malam Kereneng
Just off Jl Hayam Wuruk, adjacent to Kereneng bemo terminal.
More than fifty vendors convene at this night market from dusk to dawn every night, dishing
out super-cheap soups, noodle and rice dishes from Rp15,000, including
babi guling
, fresh
fruit juices and cold beers.
Daily roughly 6pm-4am.
Warung Wardani
Jl Yudistira 2 0361 224398.
The locals' favourite, this place rustles up
the finest
nasi campur
you'll eat in Denpasar (Rp25,000), a delicious feed of crispy lemon-
grass chicken, fried prawns and sate, plus
nasi soto ayam
(spicy chicken soup with rice),
soto
babad
(meat soup) and
gado-gado
.
Daily 8.30am-4pm.
SHOPPING
Perhaps the second-best reason to visit Denpasar after the museum is the city's selection of
markets
. Tourists find them picturesque but for the Balinese they're for mundane day-to-day
