Bajra Sandhi
Renon; entrance just off Jl Raya Puputan • Daily 9am-5pm • Rp10,000 • Renon is served by Sanur-bound bemos
The government administrative district, Renon , on the southeastern edge of the city, is an-
other world from downtown Denpasar; all landscaped gardens, broad tree-lined boulevards
and space galore. Among the offices is the huge grey lava-stone Bajra Sandhi (“Balinese
People's Struggle”) monument, at the heart of the Lapangan Puputan Margarana park.
Designed by Taman Budaya's architect, Ida Bagus Tugur, to resemble a priest's bell, the
monument's structure also symbolizes the date of Indonesia's Declaration of Independence -
August 17, 1945 - with its eight entrances, seventeen corners and height that measures 45m.
The upper floor contains a series of 33 dioramas illustrating edited episodes from Balinese
history. Climb the spiral stairs and you're rewarded with a panoramic view across Denpasar's
rooftops.

BY BEMO
Bemos arrive at one of four terminals on the edges of town. All times are (very) approximate
depending on traffic, and prices are a guide only.
Batubulan Batubulan terminal, on the far-flung northeast fringes, runs regular services to
Ubud (40min-1hr 20min; Rp14,000), east Bali, parts of north Bali and Nusa Dua via Sanur
(dropping passengers on the outskirts at the Sanur Paradise Plaza hotel) and the eastern out-
skirts of Kuta.
Kereneng Kereneng terminal off Jl Hayam Wuruk, in east central Denpasar covers Sanur
(15-25min; Rp7000); services are fairly erratic.
Tegal On Jl Imam Bonjol, in the southwest corner, Tegal covers routes south of Denpasar,
including Kuta (25min; Rp14,000), Legian (Rp14,000), Tuban/airport (35min; Rp15,000),
Jimbaran (40min; Rp18,000), Nusa Dua (Rp20,000) and Sanur (25min; Rp8000), though fre-
quencies on all these routes vary due to falling demand.
Ubung Ubung, in its own suburb way off to the northwest on the main road to Tabanan, runs
frequent transport to north and west Bali, as well as to Padang Bai (for Lombok) and Java.
