In-Depth Information
Other terminals There are smaller bemo terminals on Jl Gunung Agung, for transport
to Canggu and Kerobokan (Rp8000); near the Sanglah hospital, for Benoa Harbour and
Suwung; at Wangaya for Sangeh and Pelaga; and at Suci for Pulau Serangan.
BY BUS
Bali's new public bus service, the Trans Sarbagita, runs from Denpasar. The routes are:
Batubulan bemo terminal-Sanur bypass-Kuta Central Parking-Jimbaran-Nusa Dua; and
Puputan Square (Renon)-Udayana University Campus near Jimbaran-GWK. In theory buses
run every 30min from 5am-9pm. Current flat-rate fares are Rp3500. Less frequent feeder
minibuses link the Tegal terminal to the airport via Central Parking Kuta.
INFORMATION
Tourist office Near the Bali Museum at Jl Surapati 7 (Mon-Thurs 7.30am-3.30pm, Fri
6am-1pm; 0361 226302). Specific questions can be answered here, particularly about
transport and festivals, and they've a decent city map, but don't expect much more.
GETTING AROUND
By bemo Denpasar's bemo system seems designed to make heads spin. The city has four
main terminals - Tegal, Kereneng, Batubulan and Ubung - which are linked by circuitous
routes, so getting across town is easy but often time-consuming as you have to wait for a
bemo to fill at each transit point (anything from 5min to 1hr), before a long tortuous ride
through the city. A taxi is often worth the Rp30,000 extra. All bemos are colour-coded. As
ever, wave to hail one and state your exact destination before you enter. Prices are higher
for foreigners: expect to pay Rp10,000 for a cross-city ride or Rp12,000 to Batubulan. For
impartial advice on routes and prices, ask at the controller's office at each terminal. Useful
routes include: the Tegal-Nusa Dua bemo (dark blue) via Renon, and the Kereneng-Ubung
bemo (turquoise) via Jl Gajah Mada, past the Bali Museum.
By taxi Metered taxis circulate around the city (an initial Rp6000, then Rp6000/km) or you
can ring for one; Blue Bird taxis ( 0361 701111) are the most reliable.
ACTIVITIES
Dance performances Tourist performances (about 2hr; Rp80,000) of the Barong (daily
9.30am) take place at the Catur Eka Budhi on Jl Waribang, in Denpasar's eastern Kesiman
district, while the Kecak (daily 6.30pm) is performed at the Stage Uma Dewi, also on Jl Wari-
bang, about 300m south of the Barong dance stage. Batubulan-bound bemos from Ubung and
Kereneng pass the corner of Jl Waribang, from where it's a short signposted walk.
