BUKIT INDULGENCE
Superb surf aside, the Bukit has acquired a reputation for super-luxury resorts which take
advantage of the peninsula's alchemy of high cliffs, churning waves, gorgeous sunsets and
escapism. Arguably, the most prestigious is Alila Villas Uluwatu ( 0361 848 2166, ali-
lahotels.com ) on the cliff at the southern end of the Bukit. Five-star villas are gorgeous,
naturally, but the public areas are staggeringly stylish, too, with an infinity pool that merges
into the horizon and has graced the cover of many a glossy magazine. It comes as little
surprise to learn it is a fixture in the world's best 100 hotels awards. If the $825-a-night
price tag smarts, you could splash out in the well-regarded restaurants - Warung offers
Indonesian dishes, Cire serves MediterAsian food like snapper in ginger Usukuchi broth
(Rp240,000) - or simply settle in for a drink in the Sunset Cabanna , a striking latticed box
cantilevered over the cliff. Even at Rp145,000 a cocktail, it's worth a detour after a long
afternoon.
