beatable for classy beachfront dining. No surprise a restaurant named “fisherman” showcases
local fresh seafood; expect the likes of pan-fried prawns with a pulp of tamarind sauce and
fried garlic (Rp130,000). Daily noon-11pm.
The Rock Bar Ayana Resort and Spa, Jl Karang Mas Sejahtera 0361 702222. Perched 20m
above the waves at the base of the Bukit cliffs, this is one of Bali's most celebrated bars with
queues to match. Expect the crowd to arrive by inclinator car, arrive by 5pm at least for sun-
set and leave early(ish) to avoid return queues. Still, it's impressively arranged over several
terraces with DJs stoking the atmosphere later on. Mon-Thurs 4pm-1am, Fri-Sun 4pm-3am.
Sundara Southern beachfront, also via Jl Bukit Permai 0361 708333. You can lose a
day at this glamorous beachside bar/restaurant; there's a 50m infinity pool above the waves,
a bar for cocktails and international cuisine in a spectacular restaurant; from posh pizzas
(around Rp140,000) and Wagyu beefburgers for lunch to a fine-dining seafood dinner menu.
Now preferred to The Rock Bar by some of the style cognoscenti. Daily 11am-1am, food
11.30am-2.30pm & 6-10.30pm.

store and factory of this ceramic specialist offers sophisticated and simple designs, as well as
table linen, cutlery and knick-knacks. Daily 8am-8pm.
SPA TREATMENTS

has garnered numerous awards; its two Spa on the Rocks treatment rooms surrounded by sea
are the subject of many a photograph. You'll pay dearly, though: basic massages start from
$116 for 1hr 15min, while a 2hr signature seven Chakra Dhara Ayurvedic/aromatherapy mas-
sage treatment costs $262. Daily 9am-10pm.

Off the main Jimbaran-Uluwatu road, the monumental Garuda Wisnu Kencana cultural
park, or GWK (pronounced “Gay Way Kah”), is a massive project that's still being carved
out of the hillside but welcomes visitors nonetheless. The focal point is a towering copper
statue of the Hindu god Vishnu astride his sacred vehicle, the half-man, half-bird Garuda -
when complete the 146m, 4000-tonne monument should be quite a sight. At the time of re-
search the god's head and chest stood 20m high. Critics have deplored the commercial rather
than religious motivation of the venture and muttered about Bali as a Hindu theme park - a
comment that resonates with concerns about the “touristification” of Balinese culture. Even
