In-Depth Information
Mannekepis Jl Raya Seminyak 2 0361 847 5784, mannekepis-bistro.com ; map .
Describing itself as a jazz and blues bistro, this lovely place is like an old Belgian bar. It has
live music several times a week and a great international menu (plenty of Belgian specials).
Dark wood and a friendly vibe all add to the attraction. Daily 10am-1am.
Woobar Jl Petitenget 0361 300 0106, wretreatbali.com ; map . The glossy bar of the W
Retreat hotel is very Ibiza or Miami club-cool - start beachside on the terrace with sunset
cocktails (from Rp135,000), then move into the main bar area, all soundtracked by chunky
disco-house. A small downstairs club opens for occasional inter-national DJs. Sun-Thurs
noon-1am, Fri & Sat noon-2am.
SHOPPING
Not even Ubud comes closed to Kuta-Legian-Seminyak for its varied shopping , especially
for clothes, surfing gear, homewares and souvenirs. With stamina you could go on a retail
safari from Bemo Corner up Jl Legian for 6km, discovering everything from cheap, mass-
market stuff to style and substance around Seminyak; Jl Kayu Aya is the Bond Street of Bali,
where designers rule. Note that most so-called “art markets” actually sell souvenir tat: mass-
produced woodcarvings, penis-shaped bottle-openers and Bintang T-shirts.
DEPARTMENT STORES, SUPERMARKETS AND SHOPPING CENTRES
Beachwalk Jl Pantai Kuta beachwalkbali.com ; map . Opened in 2012, this cathedral to
consumer culture is the antithesis of the neighbouring stalls - its multistorey venue has cool-
ing mists, the full gamut of international chains from Accessorize to Zara and Gap plus cafés
like Starbucks , even a cinema. Love it or loathe it. Daily 10am-midnight.
Discovery Shopping Mall Jl Kartika Plaza, Tuban discoveryshoppingmall.com ; map . A
colossal place on the seafront that's a good one-stop shopping destination, with scores of in-
ternational and local brand-name clothing stores, including Indonesian department stores, a
bookshop or two, plus several cafés. Daily 10am-10pm.
Matahari Kuta Square; map . The Kuta standard struggles on, now fairly downmarket but
useful for the basics you forgot to bring - like a day-bag, perhaps - as well as the usual cheap
T-shirts and bikinis. The souvenirs are tacky, but sold at fixed prices. Daily 10am-10pm.
ART, BOOKS, DVDS AND MUSIC
Biasa Artspace Jl Raya Seminyak 34 0361 730308, biasaart.com ; map . Part of the
clothing store next door, this light commercial gallery specializes in exhibitions of modern
Indonesian art; most of the works would blow the average budget but it's always interesting
to look. Daily 9am-9pm.
Ganesha In Biku restaurant, Jl Raya Petitenget 888 0361 857 0888; map . An excellent
range of fiction and nonfiction, especially strong on Balinese subjects and mind, body and
soul material, and including some rare and out-of-print works. Daily 8am-11pm.
