EATING
You won't go hungry: there are thousands of places to eat, from tiny warung to cutting-edge
dining experiences ”. The most sophisticated (and expensive) are in Seminyak, Petitenget
and especially Kerobokan; there's often little to differentiate the tourist restaurants in Kuta
and Legian (we've selected some of the standouts). If rupiah are precious, Kuta's main night
market ( pasar senggol ), on Jl Blambangan, at the southern edge of Kuta, which offers mains
from Rp15,000.
KUTA AND TUBAN
Aromas Café Jl Legian 0361 751003; map . An ideal escape from exhaust fumes while
shopping, this serves good veggie dishes in a garden dining room: Mexican black bean and
avocado wraps, Italian, Indian and Indonesian dishes (Rp40,000-60,000), most organic, all
washed down with fresh juices. Daily 8am-10pm.
Balcony Jl Benesari 0361 750655; map . This airy place segues from light breakfasts and
lunches of posh burgers and wraps into surfer-friendly Indonesian and international dishes
like beef rendang and fish or steak grills, priced around Rp70,000. Also has magazines to
browse. Daily 7am-midnight.
Kori Poppies 2 0361 758605, korirestaurant.co.id ; map . A lovely garden setting off
Poppies 2 plus good food make this old-timer one of Kuta's standouts. Indonesian standards
include ikan pepes (grilled mahi-mahi steamed in a banana leaf; Rp76,000) and sates, while
Thai and international dishes are also on the menu (though there's not a lot of choice for ve-
getarians). It's a lovely spot for a quiet evening drink, too. Daily noon-11pm.
Ma Joly Jl Wana Segara 0361 753780; map . The beachside restaurant of The Sandi
Phala hotel scores for romance and light international-Asian dishes that live up to the loca-
tion: expect sea bass cooked in local spices with jackfruit salsa (Rp200,000) or Angus fillet
with truffle mousseline (Rp300,000). Five-course menus (Rp510,000) offer good value for a
splurge. Daily 8am-10pm.
Made's Warung Jl Pantai Kuta 0361 755297, madeswarung.com ; map . The original
tourist warung from 1969, now a Kuta institution that appeals for its simplicity and great
classic Indonesian dishes like nasi campur and Balinese specials such as duck
(Rp45,000-180,000). The portions are large, the quality excellent. There's an offshoot on Jl
Raya Seminyak in a rather more elegant setting. Daily 8am-midnight.
Pantai Jl Wana Segara 0361 753196; map . A so-so menu of Indonesian and international
staples - plenty of seafood and the likes of grilled chicken with lemon and garlic (Rp50,000)
- but what a location, right on the beach. There are no lamps at night, mind, so visit for late
afternoon/dusk. It's a 10min walk south of Discovery Shopping Mall. Daily noon-10pm.
Poppies Poppies 1 0361 751059; map . A Kuta institution, established in 1973, which
christened the road. And this haven from the hustle still packs 'em in for a huge Indonesian
