Notice that the mean is far more sensitive to the addition of this new outlier. It jumped from
$164K to almost $200K, while the median increased by less than $100. Relative insensitivity
to outliers is another reason to consider using the median when communicating “typical” val-
ues of skewed distributions.
Visualizing Typical Values of Non-Normal Distributions
If we create box plots of player salary for each of the teams similar to the way we created
box plots in the RBI example, we would end up with the view shown in Figure 6-13 .
