generated in the region, 34 per cent was generated by surveyed establishments in
Victoria Falls, 28 per cent in Livingstone, 26 per cent in northern Botswana, and
just 6 per cent each in Caprivi and the Upper Zambezi.
As can be seen in Table 8.4, just in excess of 4900 people were employed in
accommodation establishments within the KAZA region in 2004. Within the
accommodation sector, 95 per cent of workers were local employees, 2 per cent
were non-local nationals, 1 per cent KAZA nationals and 3 per cent were expatri-
ates. Livingstone provided 44 per cent of total tourism employment, 23 per cent
was in Victoria Falls, 14 per cent in northern Botswana, 11 per cent in Caprivi and
the remaining 8 per cent was in enterprises along the Upper Zambezi. The total
annual salary bill for these employees was approximately US$17.7 million (see
Table 8.3). The differences in wages paid across countries were stark - for
instance, while Victoria Falls provided 23 per cent of the workforce, these workers
earned 35 per cent of the total salary bill; in contrast, Livingstone establishments
provided 44 per cent of total employment, but paid workers only 36 per cent of
the total salary bill.
Of the 4913 employees in the accommodation sector, a total of 4662 local
workers were employed, 688 of them in part-time employment; equating to 4318
