full time equivalents; 61 per cent of the local workforce was male, the remaining
39 per cent female. Although local employees made up 95 per cent of the tourism
workforce, they earned only 71 per cent of the total wage bill (Table 8.5).
Differences in wage levels between countries were significant, with average annual
local wages estimated to range between just US$974 in Livingstone and US$5368
across the Zambezi River in Victoria Falls.
Across the KAZA region, approximately 47 per cent of non-wage operating
expenditures (approximately US$19.3 million) were made locally, with regional
averages ranging between 36 and 61 per cent - the lowest in Livingstone and the
highest in northern Botswana. It is estimated that profits of almost US$4.5 million
were retained within the KAZA region earned by locally-owned enterprises - 67
per cent of this amount was earned by establishments in northern Botswana, 18
per cent by those along the Upper Zambezi, 6 per cent in Victoria Falls and
Livingstone (each) and the remaining 2 per cent by establishments in Caprivi.
Tour operators
As can be seen from Table 8.6, tour operating capacity exceeded 1 million tourists
during 2004, with approximately one-third of capacity in northern Botswana, and
two-thirds in Zambia. (As noted above, these results underestimate the total size
of the tour operator sector due to the lack of results for enterprises operating in
Victoria Falls.)
Approximately 314,200 individual tourists were estimated to have gone on
tours in the region in 2004. Of the revenue generated in the region, enterprises in
northern Botswana generated 64 per cent of the total, while Livingstone operators
generated the remaining 34 per cent. Of the tour operators' guests, 11 per cent
were from KAZA countries and 89 per cent were foreign (Table 8.7).
Of the 616 workers employed in the tour operator sector (see Table 8.8), only
1 was employed in a part-time position. Approximately 88 per cent of employees
were locally employed, 1 per cent were non-local nationals, 1 per cent were KAZA
