In-Depth Information
When to go
Thailand is a tropical and humid country during the majority of the year but the climate can
vary by geographic region. Northern Thailand has three seasons in the year split by month,
November to February, March to May, and June to November.
The first season in late November to February is cool and dry with mild temperatures from
60 degrees Fahrenheit at night to around 80 degrees during the day. Up in the mountains and
at high altitudes you could find the temperatures dropping to freezing at night, so be sure to
pack extra warm layers if you'll be hiking at that time or if you will be camping.
From March to May, the summer season, you will find hotter and more humid weather but
it is still quite dry so you can leave your rain gear at home. Temperatures can reach over
100 degrees during the day in Chiang Mai so you will need a lot of sunblock and water to
survive the heat. You will also want to plan your activities and accommodation accordingly
ensuring you have air conditioning or a fan in the room.
May to November is monsoon season and this is when it really starts to rain cats and dogs
in the north. Rainfall is the heaviest and this can cause flooding so be sure to check the con-
ditions of roads if you are planning to leave the major cities for the back roads. Most roads
should be fine so it is still worth visiting the north, just bring proper rain gear and some
quick drying clothing.
