In-Depth Information
When you output sequential files, After Effects applies a special suffix to your
file name to designate that a numerical sequence needs to be added to the
file name. The amount of number signs indicates the length of the numerical
string to be appended to the name (i.e. FileName_[####] equals
FileName_1234.jpg).

This is a critical operation to allowing Multi-Machine Rendering. This enables
all the After Effects Render Engines to Render the same project, but work
on unique files at the same time. If it's not selected, only one machine will work
on each Render Queue project item at a time. This is also why you can't
Multi-Machine Render QuickTime, MPEG, or AVI movies, since they are single
self-contained files of multiple frames, rather than multiple files of single frames.
As always, it's best practice to save your work with a new name prior to
rendering. But to prepare for Network Renderings, you should perform one last
procedure: Reduce Project. The Reduce Project command removes all unused
file resources and Comps from your project. This can greatly help speed up
Network Rendering, because your RenderNodes won't have to access or load
unnecessary files. Reduce Project can be applied to multiple Comps at the
same time and takes into account all deeply rooted Precomps, so you don't
