Ray Tracing for the Rest of Us
My final recommendation to the stalwart 3D animator who intends to render
zillions of refractions and reflections in their flying glass logo is this:
don't do it !
There are times when scenes demand that you utilize the power of your 3D
application's Ray Tracing capabilities. But more often than not, complex
refractions and reflections can be emulated by using several built-in Effects
Filters. The most basic example of this Ray Cheating is to use the Turbulent
Displace Effects Filter.
1
Open
Ray Cheating.aep ,
then go to frame 48.
2
To layer 2, add
Effect
Distort
Turbulent Displace .
3
Scale (S) layer 2 up to
125%.
In the Effect Controls
window, adjust the Amount
setting to 386 and the Size
to 8.0.
This applies a severe
distortion to the expanded
clouds. You next will need to
add a Curves adjustment to
make the logo stand out
from the background
even more.
4
To layer 2,
add
Effect
Adjust
Curves .
