Omission of Subject
Mi papá es muy alto. Tiene 55 años. (My dad is very tall. He is 55.)
In the second sentence, 'he' is left out since we already know who the sentence is
about.
Subject at the end of the sentence
El carro lo arregló el mecánico. (The mechanic fixed the car.)
The subject 'the mechanic' is found at the end of the sentence and the object 'the
car' is at the beginning.
Diminutives (Word endings)
Diminutives are very commonly added to words especially the diminutive 'ito' which is
used to say something in a cuter way or to talk about something that is a small. For ex-
ample, the cute little dog (el perrito) but it is used much more frequently than in English
and can be added to adjectives and nouns. It is often used to show affection, 'Mi amorcito'
(My little love).
Capitalization
Many words that are capitalized in English are not in Spanish. For example, days of the
week, months, languages and nationalities.
Ex: English =
inglés
Colombian =
colombiano
Thursday = el jueves
March = marzo
