GLOSSARY
The most common stumbling block to making oneself
understood in another language is pronunciation. Listen
carefully and try to imitate the people around you. Try to
speak with the local accent, even if you feel self-conscious
or foolish.
Generally, when we aren't completely coni dent in our
speaking abilities, we tend to emphasise our own peculiar
way of pronouncing words in order to maintain an element
of familiarity in a situation where everything else is strange
and foreign. This may make you feel more comfortable, but
it won't help others understand you.
Think of yourself as an actor or actress playing a role.
It is a good way to surmount these inhibitions. France is a
theatre of pleasures. Acting like you are part of the show is
a good way for both you and the person with whom you are
speaking to have some fun!
