Final Thoughts on Game Character Development
One thing that should have come through loud and clear in this chapter is
that in order for a game to feature well-conceived, consistent, and believ-
able characters—whether the player character, an enemy AI, or a neutral
NPC—the team members working on those characters' development must
all work from a unified vision. That vision—based either on an original
concept or a pre-existing one—is generally described and owned by the
person in charge of the game's narrative design, and thus should be clearly
described to the rest of the team before they start their own work.
By the time all this information about your major characters is in circula-
tion and has been fully discussed and digested, the team will be as familiar
with these fictional people as they are with their best friends. Which is ex-
actly as it should be!
