Level and Mission Development
This chapter is most applicable to level designers and anyone else
involved in the creation of game levels, missions, and objectives.
In nearly every video game, somewhere between the lofty goals of the
overall game design and the rubber-meets-the-road reality of the
moment-to-moment core game mechanics, is what most players will re-
member actually experiencing: game levels . (Note: Throughout this
chapter, the terms “level,” “mission,” and “scenario” will be used inter-
changeably.)
Like paragraphs on a page or chapters in a book, game levels organize
ideas and experiences into discrete, contained, and digestible chunks. They
are generally designed to stand alone, providing a focused and satisfying
unit of entertainment. At the same time, they also link together to form a
larger experience and an overarching story—pre-crafted or emergent, but
