Figure 6.17 Plots of knee angle, moment of force, and power in a slow runner. Five
power phases are evident: K 1 , energy absorption by knee extensors; K 2 , positive work
as extensors shorten under tension; K 3 , deceleration of backward rotation of leg and foot
as thigh drives forward during late stance and early swing; K 4 , deceleration of swinging
leg and foot by knee flexors prior to heel contact; and K 5 , small positive burst to flex
the leg slightly and slow down its forward motion to near zero velocity prior to heel
contact. (From Winter, 1983. Reproduced by permission of J. Biomechanics .)
