pets, especially on Sundays. Today, only a couple of these traditional pet stalls survive. For
Barcelona'sapartment-dwellers,birds,turtles,fish,hamsters,andrabbitsareeasiertohandle
than dogs and cats. But animal-rights groups started lobbying to cut back on these stalls be-
cause so many families were making impulse buys with no serious interest in taking care
of these cute little critters—and many ended up being flushed. Still, if you're walking by at
night, you may hear the sad sounds of little tweety birds locked up in their collapsed kiosks.
