In-Depth Information
Look for a competent farrier and ask for his or her recommendations as to which of your
horses should be shod and which should be left barefoot and trimmed and how often. Then
stick to the schedule. You'll probably need to schedule a farrier visit every 6 to 8 weeks.
Earn the respect of your veterinarian and farrier by being the very best horseman you can,
and they will be there to help you when you need them the most. Provide these valuable
professionals with a safe, comfortable place to work (see chapters 7 , Barn, and 8 , Interi-
or, for more on work areas). Don't try to cut corners on hoof or health care. Your horse's
well-being is at stake and you can't afford to risk it. (For more information, see Hill and
Klimesh, Maximum Hoof Power [Trafalgar, 2000].)
