In-Depth Information
A hitch rail near your arena or round pen makes it convenient to hitch a horse when
working another.
Tie Areas
In addition to the tie areas that you have in and around your barn, you might want to con-
struct an additional hitch rail near your round pen and arena. This will come in handy when
you want a horse to stand saddled for a while before you ride or if you have several horses
you will be riding in succession. The structure the horse will be tied to should be solid
and unbreakable, such as an 8-inch post set 3 to 4 feet into the ground. Never tie to rails
or boards that could pull off if the horse is spooked. Consider laying rubber mats on the
ground in the tie area to prevent erosion from pawing or normal movement.
