In-Depth Information
Also, discing can cause footing (such as wood and rubber products) to be worked in too
deep, where they aren't useful. With some footings, discing requirements are minimal or
not recommended. Harrowing might be all that is necessary.
Daily arena maintenance should include picking up any rocks that have surfaced, remov-
ing weeds, and hand-raking trouble spots. Often, it is necessary to hand-rake the footing
back onto the track around the perimeter of the arena and at the takeoff and landing spots
of jumps.
The “track” on which you ride might eventually become either rock hard or grooved as
in a slot-car game, hampering your horse's movement. It may be necessary to frequently
disc, harrow, and water the arena footing to keep the conditions ideal for training. (See
chapter 10 , Equipment, for more information on machinery and equipment.)
Harrowing an arena may be all that is necessary to maintain footing.
