tom pintie to attain a more level gate. The fence on either side of a gate might need bracing;
see the illustrations on pages 162 and 167 .
Materials for gates vary as much as for the fences themselves. A wire stretch gate is in-
expensive and lightweight and can be made to look just like the wire fence it is a part of.
However, wire gates aren't handy to open, so would be most suitable for an occasionally
used field gate. Wooden gates work as 4-foot man gates, but longer ones are often very
heavy. Unless properly engineered, it would be difficult to keep a 16-foot wooden gate
from sagging. And horses tend to chew wooden gates. Heavy gates should always have a
support block at both the open and closed positions to prevent sagging and to extend the
life of the hinges. Some tubular metal gates are light, sturdy, and safe. Flat metal farm gates
with sharp edges should not be used in horse facilities.
Make machinery gates 12′ to 16′ wide, depending on the size of your tractor and im-
plements.
