Roof Types
The gable roof is very popular and allows great flexibility in layout. The shed roof is often
used for three-sided shelters or small stables or as an addition to an existing building that
has a gable roof. The monitor is essentially two shed roofs with a gable in the middle. This
is good for long rows of stalls. The area under the upper gable roof can be windows, vents,
or clear panels.
Roofing Materials
If you live in wildfire country, choose a roofing with a Class C or better rating. Metal
roofs are quick to install, relatively inexpensive, very low maintenance, and fire resistant.
However, they can be very noisy, may leak around the fasteners, are prime candidates for
condensation problems, and can make the barn hot during sunny weather unless insulated
and vented. Zinc-coated (galvanized) steel panels are durable and economical but not par-
ticularly appealing. Steel and aluminum sheets with baked-on colors are more attractive,
with steel being the stronger of the two. Translucent fiberglass panels can easily be incor-
porated into metal roofs for light. Snow that accumulates on metal roofs often slides off in
huge sheets and without warning. Plan doorways and runs with this in mind.
