In-Depth Information
Be sure that key buildings have all-weather access for the delivery of building materials
and eventually for hay, grain, bedding, and so on. Plan for ample space to turn large trucks
and/or trailers around. Ensure that routine chores are possible without great hardship dur-
ing all seasons.
Locate key buildings close enough to the house for security and convenience, yet far
enough downwind so that flies and odor do not invade the residence. Formulate your fire
plan as you plan your facilities. (See chapter 16 , Disasters, for more about fire safety.)
Make the appearance as nice as possible without sacrificing functional aspects of your
layout. Plan for safety, efficiency, and convenience.
Choosing a Builder
If you are not constructing your own facilities, you will need to either hire various builders
and workmen for the different aspects of your plans or hire a general contractor to do this
for you. If you hire a general contractor, be sure that this person is very familiar with horse
needs and facilities.
A good builder has solid references and an experienced crew.
