When looking for professional tradesmen, ask for references from previous clients. In
the case of a builder, take the time to look at his past work and talk to people who have
hired him. Ask the builder what type of warranty comes with a building or project. It is
important to be very comfortable with the person(s) you hire.
So that you have an equitable means of comparison among bids, you or your represent-
ative should ask to see detailed building plans and/or specifications from every contractor
you are considering. This will assist you in determining the quality of materials and work
you can expect. You will need to devise a detailed list of specifications you want in your
barns, other buildings, fences, and any other facilities you will have built. When consider-
ing the construction of a pole barn, if you want an indication of joint strength, for example,
you will need information on the system of bracing used and the location, number, and size
of bolts or nails used to hold the braces together. Refer to the sample list of items to check
on when getting an estimate for a simple pole barn. Similar checklists can be made for any
other building project or improvement.
