5.1.2.6 Electrosynthesis Using Transition
Metal Complex Mediators
Transition metal complex mediators have
various reactivities and many advantages. Their
redox potentials and the selectivity of the
desired reaction can be controlled by changing
ligand. Their synthetic application is mainly
based on the reactivity of the low valent state
generated by cathodic reduction of the
mediators [2]. Typically, Co(III) complex
(vitamin B 12 ) is readily reducible, optically
active, non-toxic and inexpensive. It is reduced
at −0.9 V vs. SCE to form Co(I) complex, which
undergoes oxidative addition to alkyl halide to
form alkyl Co(III) complex as an intermediate.
