ing for a Viking helmet or a gold-painted Pharaoh, the reason to come to this warehouse-
style shop is olive wood. The pieces sold here aren't cheap but the craftsmanship is good.

TOP OF CHAPTER
Felanitx
Felanitx is an important regional centre with a reputation for ceramics, white wine and
capers (of the culinary variety). It makes an interesting stop in its own right, and as a
gateway to two interesting hilltop monuments nearby.
Lording it over the heart of town, Església de Sant Miquel (Plaça de Sa Font de Santa
Margalida; Mass) has a baroque facade and acquired its current form in 1762. Above
the Renaissance portal stands a relief of St Michael, sticking it to a discomfited-looking
devil underfoot. Across the road and directly in front of the church, a flight of steps leads
down to the Font, once the main town well.
One of inland Mallorca's most spectacular viewpoints, Santuari de Sant Salvador
( www.santsalvadorhotel.com ; church 8am-11pm) is a hilltop hermitage 5km southeast of
Felanitx. The hermitage was built in 1348, the year of one of the most disastrous waves
of plague in Europe. It has undergone several refits since then, and is a strange mix with
gaudy columns and an elaborate cave nativity scene offset by an unadorned barrel-vaul-
ted ceiling and delicately carved stone altarpiece.
There's a prominent cross (built in 1957) on a neighbouring peak, and the car park is
crowned by an enormous statue of Christ the King. At every turn, the views are heavenly.
For the real experience, you can stay the night in one of the tastefully converted cells at
the Petit Hotel Hostatgería Sant Salvador ( Click here ) .
