TOP OF CHAPTER
Son Serra de Marina
Spreading 5km east along the coast from Son Bauló, Son Serra de Marina keeps the
mood low-key and relaxed. On its southeast edge starts the Platja de Sa Canova , a 2km
stretch of virgin beach, backed by dunes and pine trees, which attracts the odd nudist.
The stiff breezes and waves lure kite- and windsurfers. Some buses on the Palma-Ca'n
Picafort route continue to Son Serra de Marina.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
BETLEM
Northeast along the coastal Ma3331, 3km from Colònia de Sant Pere, is somnolent
Betlem. Not much goes on here - reason enough to visit. Along the coast, a 3km
4WD trail hugs the Aleppo-pine-fringed shoreline until it reaches a tiny protected
bay called Es Caló , where a couple of sailboats occasionally find shelter and a
handful of people stretch out on the stony strand and swim in the turquoise wa-
ters. Behind you, dramatic limestone hills rise sharply, some barely clothed in
swaying grass. Cap Ferrutx , the windy cape north of Es Caló, is a tougher nut to
crack as there are no trails. There are some hiking options in nearby Parc Natural
de la Península de Llevant ( Click here ) .
Or strike out onto the old pilgrimage trail that leads to the serene hermitage
Ermita de Betlem by taking the marked trail towards S' Alqueria Vella. This 6km
round hike heads via the abandonedfinca(farmhouse) Cases de Betlem and
climbs through a wild and wonderfully remote valley to the hermitage. From here, it
takes just a few minutes to clamber up to the 322m viewpoint Sa Coassa , where
the entire Badia d'Alcúdia, bookended by Cap Ferrutx, spreads out before you.
