Figure 3.27 King's Cross St. Pancras. Some of the recent investment in public transport in London has been
of a very high specification and helps to improve the interchange experience.
There is more that could be developed in terms of public transport investment; for example
Crossrail could be developed into a more extensive regional service - following the example
of the Parisian RER (RĂ©seau Express RĂ©gional) - with much more extensive through services
than planned across the Southeast region. The central London tunnel could offer connecting
services to Oxford, Milton Keynes, Guildford, Chelmsford, Southend, Dartford and Gravesend,
along the lines of the 'Superlink' proposal of Michael Schabas and John Prideaux. Crossrail
2 (under consideration, but with no detailed design or funding approval) similarly could offer
extended regional linkages into London, with the potential to link Guildford, Weybridge,
Surbiton, across central London, to Alexandra Palace, Cheshunt and Hertford East (Hickman
et al., 2013) ( Figure 3.30 ), hence adding to an already extensive public transport network.
