Description
Accessed From
Disk Cleanup
Deletes files that are potentially
unwanted, including temporary
files, Recycle Bin contents, and
cached Internet pages, freeing up
hard-disk space.
Start
Computer. Right-click a
drive, and click Properties. On the
General tab, click Disk Cleanup.
Folder/Disk
Compression
Compresses the files stored in a
certain location to save a small
amount of disk space
Start
Computer. Right-click
a drive or folder, and choose
Properties. On the General tab,
select the Compress This Drive To
Save Disk Space check box.
Compressed
Archive
(Zipping)
Combines and compresses multiple
files into a single file with a .zip
extension (a Zip file), suitable for
archiving or transferring to others.
Select and then right-click the
file(s) or folder(s), and choose
Send To
Compressed (Zipped)
Folder.

Use Disk- and File-Maintenance Tools
1. Choose Start Computer. Right-click the C: drive, and choose Properties.
2.
On the Tools tab, click Check Now. The Check Disk dialog box opens.
3.
Click Start. A message appears that Windows can't check the disk while it's in use.
4.
Click Schedule Disk Check.
5.
Reboot the computer, and allow the disk to be checked.
6.
After Windows restarts, choose Start
Computer. Right-click the C: drive, and choose Properties.
7.
On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now. The Disk Defragmenter dialog box opens.
